For some reason Digg decided to add ’social networking’ features to the website. This was inevitable since the ‘friends feature’ was added. The funny part is, at the time, everyone wanted a feature that would allow you to communicate with someone on Digg.

Everyone knows the major flaw in Digg’s Shout system. . .spam. Sadly this feature is much like driving a car, and you don’t want a noob in control of it. Thankfully the Digg algorithm kicks in when someone is abusing the Shout system, but that doesn’t prevent them from using it. A member my the name of msaleem once scolded me for shouting my own story to him(I would shout something about once a week). He even threatened to remove someone from his friends list because they did the same thing I did.

Mu was aware of this issue with the Shout system. . .and tried to prevent it by asking his friends to ‘only shout him stories submitted by someone else’. I tried this too, but it’s hard to be social(add new diggers as friends). . .yet keep them up to date with your ‘personal shouting rules’.

Getting more and more disgusted with how the shout system worked, I started shouting less and less. . .and now I have completely disabled it. I like the idea of being social on a ’social bookmarking’ website. . .but not when it leads to spam. Instead I have now turned off Shouts all together. . .and kept my Pownce and Twitter links in my Digg profile. If anyone wants to contact me on Digg, they can contact me on there. . .and also if you check my Pownce profile you can find my AIM screen name. . .sadly I still get people spamming me this way. . .but it is waaaaay less than when I had Shouts turned on.
