Web 1.0 Branding vs Web 2.0 Branding
This is the big debate. Should you go with Personal Branding or should you go with Business Branding? Most people find business branding to be easier. . .but some say it benefits you less than personal branding.
Business Branding is less personal. You’re kind of hiding behind a brand name. . .doing the work. . .and not getting much ‘direct benefits’. But you can bring in more people, expanding not only the style of content. . .but the amount of content as well. But to most readers, you don’t get much credit for the content. When they think about the content, the brand name comes to their mind. . .not the author/developer. Yes me and you know that Mark Zuckerberg created Facebook. . .but the majority of the members don’t know, or care.
I know the name ‘Web 2.0 Branding’ sounds odd, but in technical terms, it’s true. When the bubble first popped a lot of brand names on the internet died. Leaving a lot of people with no jobs, and to the internet world, not much credibility.
Personal Branding has been around for a while, but just became big over the past 5-10 years. Imagine where your blog would be now if you started it 2-3 years earlier. Imagine how much easier your projects would have been if you had a well established blog to help launch them. The people who regularly read your blog are best people in the world. . .and if you do your job well, they will be with you until the end.
Here is a video from a blog by Gary Vaynerchuk that will not only help you pick which style of branding to go with. . .but will also show you the value in putting more into whichever brand you choose.

It’s less of a general population choice and more up to each individual. Personal branding is now required, whether you own your business or not.

That is an interesting theory. However I just don’t think it’s ‘required’ as you say.
Yes it is beneficial. . .but required?

very interesting, i was thinking about this stuff last night - to what extent should i promote my business brand vs. my personal brand and can the two be one and the same thing. Interesting video - this guy is like on speed or something ;-)

the more i think about it the more i realize that you can’t mix the personal and business brand. with your personal brand you can be abbrassive, cantankerous, edgy and challenging - all things which are associated with thought leadership while such behaviour could be seriously damaging to the business brand.
on the other hand who the hell wants a sterile business brand ? nobody.
it’s a tough one.

lol @Sash, Gary is an ‘overly excited’ guy. also i think you’re talking about handling a ‘business brand’ the way you would a personal brand. which you are correct. that will not work out in the end
