That is. . .if you are doing it right.

Currently there are two websites that are great examples of this. . .Twitter and Skype. I don’t think Twitter has plans to sell anytime soon, but I heard Skype will be sold to Google for 3 billion(if I remember right).

It seems that in the web 2.0 industry all you need is a community to get the big payout in the end. Well, that and enough money to pay for bandwidth. . .until that payday comes.

Normally, in order to get enough attention from a major company you have to have a well monetized website/service/company. You need to show hem that your project cannot only be useful to them. . .but also bring them a profit as well. After a company is purchased(which is normally in the amount of 1-2 years of revenue) it can take 1-3 years to become independently profitable for the parent company.

That doesn’t even matter anymore. Now it’s just about the community that uses your service. It’s about how passionate and active they are. You will begin to see this more and more because this type of community is better for advertisers. They see more results. . .making them more money. . .which of course brings the company more money from future advertisers.

Unless you see it this way. . .it makes no sense as to why Skype will sell for ~3 billion dollars. I know the USD isn’t as valuable as it once was. . .but this is ridiculous.

Here is a brief video blog from Gary Vaynerchuk explaining this specific topic. . .
