No longer is Digg the ‘Technology News’ website that it once was. Digg has slowly moved away from the niche that made it what it is today. It makes me wonder if this is a good direction to see Digg go in.

Greed tends to squeeze it’s way into a lot of ’success stories’. . .and this might be what is happening here. I understand that it is natural to think ‘what is next’ when it comes to building a business. I understand that if they are making $X now. . .if they continue to expand they could increase their profits that much more.

But this can only go so far. . .

You don’t want to take your original niche for granted. Yea you might not ‘need’ them anymore(right now), but it’s not like you’ll never come across those people again.

Sadly I think all of this falls more on the shoulders of Kevin Rose, than anyone else. Most of the ‘long term’ members think of ‘Kevin Rose’ when they think of Digg. They don’t see it as a major company run by dozens of people. This could be a negative result of ‘Personal Branding’. If you piss off your fans, they will ignore your future projects.

Now, Digg and Kevin Rose will always have fans. . .but it’s those ‘core’ fans that has made Digg was it is today.

There are two things happening at Digg that makes me feel this is going to happen. . .
The Decline and Fall of Tech on Digg
The Decline and Fall of Quality on Digg

Not only does Digg’s ‘core’ audience love technology news. . .but the entire community is missing out on a lot of great content.
